[Windows] [Blender] How to fix blender file thumbnails

It seems like a ton of Blender users were having issues with the latest 2.78 build of Blender, where they may come to find that the thumbnail previews stopped showing.

Given that the information is buried somewhere in a thread at blenderartists.com and is easy to overlook, I’m repeating the solution here for anyone getting into Blender on windows, or at least for me to remember it until a build comes out that fixes the issue.

  • Open up a command prompt with administrator rights (Win+X > Command Prompt (Admin) )

  • Navigate to the blender default install directory (or wherever you installed blender, should work for the steam version as well.)

64-bit Version / 32-bit Version on 64-bit
chdir c:\program files\blender foundation\blender

chdir c:\program files (x86)\blender foundation\blender

32-bit Version
chdir c:\program files\blender foundation\blender

  • run blender.exe -R
This will register blender properly so that thumbnail previews work.

  • Close any open explorer windows then re-navigate to a .blend file. Thumbnail previews should be working!

Thanks for the update, I’m trying to familiarise myself with Blender, too.
