AMD Ryzen 1800X Benchmarks, Review, and Our Opinions | AMD is Back

Ryzen is here and we have been testing the Ryzen 7 1800X. We have done more testing since our video and these review scores reflect the total data. At this point we have a very interesting CPU and a platform that needs to mature. We had random issues with the UEFI, boards loosing power, etc., but we were able to complete our tests.

Ryzen is a disruptor. You’re looking at 8 cores and 16 threads starting at $329 (less than the price of the Intel i7 7700k). The Ryzen 7 1700, 1700X, and 1800X are all the same CPU with different clock speeds, but they are binned and the 1800X should be more of an overclocker than the others.

The IPC is there. The cache is crazy fast. The frequency could stand to be higher, but these parts perform.

Overclocking was not difficult in the UEFI, but the 1800X has been pushed pretty far out of the box. We were able to push it to 4.2 comfortably, but it was around 1.5 V. This is fine if cooling is extreme, but it will greatly shorten the life of the CPU.

Testing and Benchmarking

We ran many of the tests, but the bulk of the tests were performed by Fouquin:

This video is specifically centered around the 1800X. Here are the specs on our test bench: We mentioned the Ryzen 7 1800X is a disruptor, and it absolutely is. It's amazing for productivity, even beating the far more expensive Intel i7 6900 in many tests. Also, it's more efficient in most tests. So, when compared to the X99 stuff from Intel, this is a game changer. However, we need to discuss gaming:

You’re going to see plenty of reviews that focus on gaming. It’s the one area the Ryzen parts are less attractive (when spun correctly). We tested a few games, but also have been hearing rumors that some of the games that we did not test are not performing as expected, making the Ryzen platform seem erratic for gaming. These anomalies may leave some scratching their heads, but we believe many of the issues will be addresses as the platform matures. However, these parts are not totally competitive in all gaming situations.

In the video, we pit the Ryzen 7 1800X against the Intel i7 7700k. You can watch the video for the full results, but the Intel is typically faster. Also, the Kaby Lake i5 parts are nearly the same speed as the 7700k in games, so the value specifically for high-end gaming rigs is still with the i5. Most games take about 3-4 threads so the extra power of the 8/16 Ryzen parts is lost.

So, when would you want a Ryzen for gaming? If you stream or multitask while gaming a Ryzen may do a little better. Also, if you are building a rig for creativity or productivity as well as gaming, the Ryzen parts may be very good for you.

We did something after the video that was quite interesting. Fouquin tested 4-core vs 4-core on the 1800X and the i7 7700k. The cinebench score was almost identical, with a slight edge to Ryzen. AMD has some parts coming out with fewer cores. It’d be shocking if we didn’t see a very efficient quad core or hex core priced under the i5 (and with similar frequencies). This would be extremely interesting for gamers.

As it stands, AMD is back! Granted, some kinks still need to be ironed out with the platform and some of the boards. If you want an amazing deal for a beastly CPU that bests the X99 in the price/performance metric (most of the time), the Ryzen is a great place to look. If you absolutely have to build a gaming rig today though, the i5 is the best value. However, waiting for the next batch of Ryzen CPUs is a very good option.

Productivity wise, intel gets kicked finally. The x99 cpus were wayyyy too expensive.

AMD need to release some 4C 8T to make intel drop prices on their i5.

Anxious for more motherboards. I want mATX, but features aren’t quite there yet.


@Deathspell From what I understand the 6c/12t and 4c/8t parts are supposed to start coming out in May or thereabouts.

Nice to see that there is some competition again. I guess intel is still the best bet for those just wanting to game. But Ryzen is also very competitive there too.

I’m still rocking an FX 8350. Ryzen will definitely be in my next build upgrade. Just got a GTX 1070 as well. Very excited. The last 30 seconds of this video were hilarious. Thank you.

Maybe it’s “back” when it comes to productivity but it sure as fuck still behind when it comes to gaming.

When it comes to gaming benchmarks, it’s almost universally slower than both Kaby Lake and Skylake i7’s. In some cases it’s even slower than Kaby Lake i5’s. The margin does narrow when it comes to higher resolutions, especially 4k. Seems in a lot of cases it is faster than Intel’s latest i7’s at 4k gaming. But realistically, most PC gamers still use 1080p or 1440p screens.

Disappointing. I was expecting it to completely kill Intel’s chips when it comes to gaming, but nope. Still same ol’ AMD - great in one area and just simply meh in all the others.

So unless you have a beastly GPU and 4k screen, you’re better off getting a 7700k for gaming.

The distinction in gaming performance between any of Intel’s CPUs is purely clockrate. We saw this with the Pentium G3258, absolutely thrashing the i7-4790 in most gaming benchmarks. So claiming that it’s “i5 level” is a bit disingenuous, as those come in many different clock configurations and can be faster in the higher-end SKUs than the i7s.

By the logic provided the i7-6950X has Pentium level gaming performance.

Gotta love those single threaded workloads!

When I benched a few games a couple years ago core count pretty much did not matter above two cores, clock speed helped more. Although that was a couple years ago so take it with a grain of salt. It was fun to find out though.

If it killed intel across the board it wouldnt be a 500 dollar chip though. This is going to be a solid chip for people who want a system that is more oriented for work first and gaming second.

Very CPU intensive. I had to clock my 4790k @4.8 just to keep up when there’s a lot of players in a condensed spot.

If you want to spin this part as a purely gaming chip, then yes. It’s not the best and it’s too expensive. However, I can see these really working well in our game dev rigs. The extra cores will really help when rendering stuff out and the speed is plenty fast for random gaming sessions. So, it’s an amazing price for our productivity environment. I’ll wait for their cheaper parts when it comes to recommending them specifically for gaming.

This was an invaluable review of the Ryzen. I don’t recall seeing any mention of VR. How exactly would benchmarking of VR games work the Ryzen? Would it use the same benchmarks? Could we see see some benchmarks with VR games?

Be nice to purchase the AMD Ryzen, but in Australia you’d be looking at just over $700 ($770) if the GST is added on to the purchase :scream_cat:

I am going to wait and see what happens in the next few months with Ryzen before making any new systems. I am liking current SMT benchmarks though. Performance per watt is exceptional.

Until games are optomised for Ryzen Intel will be king in the gaming world but Lisa Su has commented that 300+ game developers are currently working towards optimising new games for Ryzen, Perhaps in a couple of years multithreaded games will be a thing finally.

Ryzen is a shit overclocker because the XFR auto overclocking feature only clocks a max of 2 cores at a (single) time, so manual overclocking would be more beneficial. The problem is that from what I have seen in current testing - when pushing a 5+ percent overclock the PCI-E lanes stop working correctly, plus there’s evidence of hitting the FinFET wall.

Also, binning of non 1800x processors is a bit of a silicon lottery due to differences between XFR/power delivery and voltage sensors.
